Meet Shaljas Orkatteri

Electrical engineer Shaljas Orkatteri was recruited by WME some three years ago. We were impressed by his experience in Dubai’s construction industry, his approach to engineering design and the recognition for professionalism he had already gained with local developers. WME’s head of building services sees him as a role model for younger engineers.

Shaljas arrived in the UAE more than 8 years ago. He had trained at Visvesvaraya University, Karnataka state, India.

“Following the advice of a mentor, I wanted to experience both sides of electrical building services — site installation and design. I worked for contracting firms and for engineering consultancies.”

This approach has enabled him to work on projects from initial concept to technical delivery, visualising aspects of installation while designing, a skill highly valued at WME. He works with a team of five colleagues on special projects, and he provides team members with mentoring, training and knowledge about working constructively with local authorities such as the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA).

“There are a lot of unwritten regulations, and different approaches taken by different consultancies. We try to push the boundaries and help the authorities evolve with global trends and best practice.”

Shaljas has developed an electrical services design philosophy that delivers robust results. So, where does he see his career going now?

“Dubai is a lively city with lots of amazing construction happening around. I keep looking forward to new challenges that WME might want me to get my hands on, and that will show me what more I could learn.”
